Just a heads up. The annual America Recycles Day is Monday, November 15. Keep America Beautiful, Inc. sponsors the program. Last year 7,700 groups participated in 2,375 events. Since 1953, KAB has designed programs to engage individuals to take greater responsibility for improving their community environments.
A walk yesterday took me past a few areas that seem prone to attracting litter. What a pity. Some sorry souls still need a wee nip of recycling awareness. They must not have known about the Cash for Cans program—a popular way of raising money for schools, sport teams, scout troops, etc.
In other aluminum can news:
Brazil reported in August that for the last nine years this country has beaten out all others in percentage of cans recycled. At 96.5 percent it reportedly beats out Japan and significantly beats out the United States. How do they do it? In addition to an established infrastructure, more than 180,000 Brazilians collect cans daily. Everyday over 300 people in Rio de Janeiro alone deliver 500 kilos of beverage cans to the center.
Monies made from recycling “can” help feed a family. For instance, one recycler reports collecting 15 kilograms of aluminum cans each day, then sells them at the collection center for $17. “More than 14 billion cans were recycled last year, equivalent to four ships the size of the Titanic,” or so the report goes.
And finally, had you heard about the couple from Spokane, Washington who recently collected and sold cans to pay for their wedding—raising roughly $3800 with 400,000 cans? Pete and Andrea will continue to raise money for their honeymoon. Their idea spawned other drives, projects and wedding plans.
A lot of liquid intake going on. Cheers.

I linked your post to The Garden Club of the Back Bay’s Facebook page – Boston now has single stream recycling at last.
